Well it is late August and in Kentucky that means it is time for the State Fair. I will be honest, the fair isn't something that I have gone to much. In fact, the only memories I have of the state fair are when I was in high school and was competing in the talent contest there. Well apparently the fair has a lot more to offer than just the musical theater abilities of the youth! My dad goes almost every year and so when my parents said they were headed there today, Jax and I decided to join them.
The first "must see" at the fair is
Freddy Farm Bureau. When you go up to him he talks to you and asks you questions (with the assistance of a guy up in the second floor window with a microphone I believe). To be honest, I am not sure Jax even noticed he was "talking", he kept looking at him with a look of "what is going on?"
The next stop on our trip to see the farm animals. Jax loves animals ... from a distance ... through a gate.
Farmer Jax!
We spent a lot of time in the 4H section looking at all the displays from kids across the state. There were even several kids giving speeches and demonstrations. I learned something new about my mom on this trip. I was informed that when she was a kid she gave a speech at the fair with a topic that I have no doubt was riveting: how to pack a suitcase. :)
This city boy seemed right at home on the tractor. You will notice I do not have a picture of him about 30 seconds after he got off the tractor when he had a mini meltdown. We luckily recovered fairly quickly and were able to continue on with our day.
Probably Jax's favorite animals at the fair were the baby chicks! He would have stayed there all day I think if we had let him. I will share one funny moment we had while at the baby chicks. There was a young boy about 8 looking at them as well and two adult women. One woman said to the other (in front of the little boy) "I think that chick is dead!" Luckily a) the chick was not dead, and b) the little boy didn't seem to hear her. Way to almost traumatize a kid at the state lady!
I figured that it would be criminal to take Jax to the fair and not let him try at least one of the many unhealthy foods there. So we let him have a few bites of funnel cake (which beat out deep fried girl scout cookies). I think it was pretty safe to say that he loved it.
Something else he loved was the carousel. We stayed longer than we planned just so we could ride it when the rides opened at 2. It was past Jax's nap time, but was so much fun that he didn't seem to mind.
I think there are just some things that are more fun with kids, and the state fair is up there on my list.
We may have to start coming every year and by next year we will have two little boys to bring!
